Exercise 101 Hills with Transitions Benefits These transitions are great for building strength and balance in your horse in a way that is not possible on flat ground. 1. Locate a steady uphill grade that you can ride on. 2. Go straight up the hill in a slow walk. Focus on the same straightness as in Exercise 100. 3. Partway up the hill, transition to a square halt, facing up the hill. 4. Stand for a few seconds and then ask your horse to walk on again without crookedness. 5. Repent these transitions going up and down the hill. 6. Make four effective transitions both up and down the hill. Keep in mind Make sure you are doing Exercise 100 smoothly before tackling this one. This exercise requires more balance and pushing power from your horse. Maintain the same rein length so your horse makes the upward transitions by pushing himself from behind, as opposed to dropping on the forehand in front. Remember to keep him straight every single stride of the way, including the transitions!
